It’s a name that tends to raise a smile, but there’s a proper Yorkshire story behind Big Willy Distillery.
Our name was inspired by William Bradley, better known as the Yorkshire Giant. Born in Market Weighton in 1787, William grew to an extraordinary 7 feet 9 inches tall, making him the tallest recorded British man.
The Story of the Yorkshire Giant
William was no ordinary baby, weighing a remarkable 14 pounds at birth. By the age of 18, he had reached his full height and weighed around 27 stone. His feet measured 16 inches long, while his father, a local master tailor, made bespoke clothing to fit his enormous frame.
After leaving school, William worked on a farm near Pocklington before travelling around the country as the Yorkshire Giant. His incredible height made him a popular attraction at fairs, where he appeared alongside other celebrated acts of the time, including a huge Yorkshire pig bred in nearby Sancton.
William eventually began managing his own appearances, charging visitors a shilling to meet him. His fame even took him to Windsor, where he was presented to King George III and given a gold watch.
Despite travelling throughout the country, William always returned home to Market Weighton. His legacy remains part of the town today, from the life-sized wooden statue on the High Street to Giant Bradley Way and the annual Giant Community Day held in his honour.
A Big Name with Local Roots
Big Willy Distillery takes its name from this remarkable local character. William Bradley’s story is bold, memorable and proudly rooted in East Yorkshire, just like the spirits and ales that carry his name today.
The circus-inspired styling found across our bottles and branding pays tribute to William’s years as a travelling showman, while our motto, Stand Tall and Proud, celebrates the confidence and individuality he continues to represent.
So, while the name Big Willy might make you chuckle, it means much more to us. It’s our tribute to a Yorkshire giant, a local legend and a man who quite literally stood head and shoulders above the rest.
